Senna glycosides, also known as sennosides, are stimulant laxatives derived from the *Senna* plant. SDA Laboratories markets a generic oral tablet formulation, branded as Senna Tabs, containing 8.6 mg of sennosides for the treatment of occasional constipation. As prodrugs, sennosides pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract unchanged and are hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria into active anthrone metabolites, such as rheinanthrone. These metabolites exert their therapeutic effect by irritating the colonic mucosa and stimulating the myenteric plexus (Auerbach's plexus), which leads to increased peristaltic activity and enhanced secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. This dual action facilitates bowel movements and provides effective relief from constipation. The product is an FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) medication.
