Overview

Sennosides are stimulant laxatives derived from the leaves and fruit of the plant *Senna alexandrina*. They are used primarily to treat occasional constipation and to empty the large intestine before surgery or certain medical procedures. Sennosides work by irritating the lining of the bowel, which increases intestinal motility and fluid secretion, resulting in a laxative effect. The active components, mainly sennoside A and B, are metabolized by gut bacteria into rheinanthrone, which stimulates peristalsis in the colon and reduces water reabsorption by decreasing aquaporin 3 expression. This leads to increased fecal water content and promotes bowel movements. Sennosides are available over-the-counter in various oral forms (tablets, liquids) as well as rectal preparations[1][2][4][5].
