Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sennosides calcium is a stimulant laxative derived from the Senna plant (*Cassia senna*), primarily used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel evacuation prior to medical or diagnostic procedures. As a small molecule prodrug, sennosides remain inactive in the upper gastrointestinal tract and are hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria into active anthrone metabolites, such as rheinanthrone. These active metabolites stimulate the myenteric plexus, thereby increasing colonic peristalsis and motility. Additionally, they alter electrolyte transport to increase water secretion into the intestinal lumen, facilitating bowel movements. V.S. Pharma (V.S. International) includes sennosides calcium in its gastroenterology portfolio as an oral treatment for gastrointestinal disorders.
