Overview

SEP-701 is an investigational small molecule developed by Sunovion Pharmaceuticals (formerly Sepracor) that functions as a triple reuptake inhibitor (TRI), also known as a serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (SNDRI). By simultaneously inhibiting the transporters responsible for the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, SEP-701 aims to increase the synaptic concentrations of these three key neurotransmitters. This broad mechanism of action was designed to provide a more robust antidepressant effect than traditional SSRIs or SNRIs, particularly by addressing dopaminergic deficits associated with symptoms such as anhedonia, fatigue, and cognitive impairment. The drug was primarily developed for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), though its clinical development appears to have been discontinued in favor of other candidates in the Sunovion pipeline.
