Overview

Sepia esculenta bone refers to the dried internal shell (cuttlebone) of the golden cuttlefish Sepia esculenta. It is primarily composed of calcium carbonate and small amounts of organic matter such as β-chitin and proteins. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine as an antacid and for various gastric diseases, it has also been studied for its phosphate-binding properties in patients with chronic kidney disease. Cuttlebone can lower serum phosphate levels due to its high calcium content and may have additional effects from magnesium and iron components that block phosphorus absorption. Bioactive peptides derived from Sepia esculenta have demonstrated antioxidant activity in preclinical models[5][6]. The product is considered a natural substance rather than a conventional pharmaceutical drug.
