Septin 7 siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of the Septin 7 (SEPT7) gene. Septin 7 is a critical component of the septin cytoskeleton, which plays a significant role in regulating the activation and function of mesenchymal cells, such as myofibroblasts. In research conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, knockdown of Septin 7 using siRNA was shown to disrupt the entire septin filament network, effectively reversing the pro-fibrotic effects of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ1). This genetic inhibition leads to reduced production of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, such as collagen and fibronectin, and attenuates the migration and cytokine secretion of activated myofibroblasts. The therapeutic potential of targeting Septin 7 is being explored for the treatment of intestinal fibrosis and strictures associated with Crohn's disease.
