Overview

SER-428 is an investigational live biotherapeutic product (LBP) developed by Seres Therapeutics, designed to reduce the colonization and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. It comprises a defined consortium of commensal bacterial strains, specifically selected to restore the gastrointestinal microbiome's natural resistance to pathogens. The primary target of SER-428 is carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), a significant cause of healthcare-associated infections. By re-establishing a diverse microbial environment, SER-428 aims to outcompete CRE for nutrients and space, thereby preventing the blooms of resistant bacteria that often lead to bloodstream infections in vulnerable populations, such as patients in intensive care or those undergoing organ or stem cell transplantation.
