SER140 is a first-in-class, small peptide interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) receptor antagonist being developed by Serodus for the treatment of diabetes and related comorbidities, including diabetic kidney disease and other type 2 diabetes complications.[1][2][10][12] As a short peptide (around 10–14 amino acids), SER140 potently blocks IL-1β receptor signaling, inhibiting NF-κB activation and downstream inflammatory cytokine production such as TNFα, thereby reducing the low-grade chronic inflammation that drives β-cell dysfunction and diabetes progression.[1][2][4][10] In non-obese diabetic mouse models, subcutaneous SER140 preserved pancreatic β-cell mass, reduced IL-1β–mediated apoptosis, increased plasma insulin, lowered blood glucose, and postponed diabetes onset by more than 50%, supporting its potential as a disease-modifying therapy that protects islets and slows progression of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.[1][2][4][7][12] The drug remains in preclinical or very early clinical development, with planned early-phase trials in diabetic patients.[1][2][8][10][12]
