Seractide acetate is a synthetic polypeptide hormone corresponding to thirty-nine amino acids of human corticotropin (adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH), differing from full-length human corticotropin at four positions. It acts as a potent agonist of the melanocortin receptor 2 (MC2R), stimulating the adrenal cortex to increase synthesis of corticosteroids—mainly glucocorticoids and also sex steroids such as androgens. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1978 but was never marketed and was ultimately withdrawn in 2014 for safety reasons[1][2][3]. Its primary indication would have been conditions requiring stimulation of endogenous corticosteroid production.
