Serasept

Serasept is a topical antiseptic solution containing polyhexanide (also known as polyhexamethylene biguanide or PHMB) as its active ingredient. It is used for the local treatment and antisepsis of acute and chronic wounds, including pressure ulcers (decubiti). The product exerts its antimicrobial effect by binding to and disrupting microbial cell membranes, leading to the loss of cytoplasmic integrity and subsequent cell death. Serasept is currently being evaluated by RWTH Aachen University in a Phase 3 clinical trial (AntiSeptic: Resistance Testing for Wound Treatment, NCT04172363) to determine if tailoring antiseptic choice based on antimicrobial resistance testing improves clinical outcomes compared to standard care.
