Overview

Sergliflozin (GW869682) is an investigational small molecule drug that acts as a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Its mechanism of action involves blocking SGLT2 in the renal proximal tubules, thereby reducing glucose reabsorption and promoting urinary glucose excretion. This leads to lower blood glucose levels and potential weight loss due to caloric loss through glycosuria. Sergliflozin was developed primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Clinical studies have evaluated its effects on weight loss, body composition changes, food intake, urine glucose excretion in obese subjects, and safety/tolerability in patients with type 2 diabetes[1][3][4][5][7]. The drug was developed by GSK.
