Overview

SERP-2 is a recombinant viral serine protease inhibitor (serpin) derived from Myxomavirus, functioning as an immunomodulatory protein. It acts as a "cross-class" serpin, inhibiting both caspase-1 (involved in inflammasome activation and pyroptosis) and caspases 8, 10, as well as granzyme B (involved in apoptosis), thereby broadly blocking both innate and adaptive immune cell inflammatory pathways. SERP-2 has been investigated as a protein therapeutic to reduce tissue injury and inflammation in preclinical models of vascular disease and liver ischemia-reperfusion injury, demonstrating protective effects by decreasing inflammatory cytokine cascades, cellular necrosis, and immune cell infiltration. As a virus-derived immunomodulator, it has shown promise in reducing atherosclerosis, transplant injury, and post-ischemic injury in several animal models[1][4].
