Serpina

Serpina is a proprietary Ayurvedic herbal formulation developed and manufactured by Himalaya Wellness Company. Launched in 1934 as the world's first natural anti-hypertensive drug, Serpina is prepared from the root extract of *Rauwolfia serpentina* (commonly known as Sarpagandha or Indian snakeroot). The primary active alkaloid in the extract is reserpine, which acts as an irreversible inhibitor of vesicular monoamine transporters 1 and 2 (VMAT1 and VMAT2). By blocking VMAT, Serpina prevents the vesicular uptake and storage of monoamine neurotransmitters (such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin), leading to their depletion in presynaptic terminals. This depletion decreases peripheral sympathetic adrenergic tone, reduces peripheral vascular resistance, and lowers cardiac output, thereby effectively reducing blood pressure. Serpina is primarily indicated for the management of mild to moderate hypertension and is also utilized for its calming, sedative, and anxiolytic properties to manage anxiety disorders.
