Overview

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme originally derived from the bacterium *Serratia marcescens* found in the digestive tract of silkworms. It is used primarily in Japan and Europe as an anti-inflammatory and mucolytic agent, with applications in general surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, and gynecology. The enzyme works by breaking down proteins into amino acids, which helps reduce inflammation, swelling (edema), pain, and mucus production. Its mechanism includes hydrolyzing inflammatory mediators such as bradykinin, serotonin, and histamine; dissolving dead tissue around wounds; reducing biofilm formation by bacteria; modifying cell adhesion molecules; and enhancing antibiotic effectiveness against biofilm-forming bacteria. Despite its widespread use for conditions like postoperative swelling, arthritis-related pain/inflammation, sinusitis, fibrocystic breast disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, back pain and more—robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
