Overview

Sertindole is an atypical antipsychotic medication developed by the Danish pharmaceutical company H. Lundbeck and marketed under license by Abbott Labs. It is a phenylindole derivative primarily indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia. Sertindole acts as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors in the brain, as well as alpha1-adrenoreceptors. It has minimal anticholinergic effects and little effect on serum prolactin levels[1][5][6]. The drug was first marketed in several European countries in 1996 but was withdrawn due to concerns about cardiac adverse effects (QTc prolongation). After safety reviews and new data submission, it was reintroduced with restrictions for use only in patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate other antipsychotics[2][5].
