Overview

**Sertraline** is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (*SSRI*) antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder; obsessive-compulsive disorder; panic disorder; post-traumatic stress disorder; social anxiety disorder; and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It works primarily by inhibiting the serotonin transporter (*SERT*), increasing levels of serotonin in the brain and thereby improving mood and emotional balance. Secondary pharmacological actions include weak inhibition of the dopamine transporter (*DAT*) at higher doses and antagonism at sigma-1 receptors. The original developer was Pfizer[2][7]. The drug is widely prescribed due to its efficacy and relatively favorable side effect profile compared to older antidepressants[5].
