sertraline + cytarabine is a combination therapy being investigated by Columbia University for the treatment of relapsed and refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The regimen combines sertraline (Zoloft), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) typically used as an antidepressant, with cytarabine (ara-C), a standard antimetabolite chemotherapy agent. This approach is based on the concept of tumor reversion, where sertraline is repurposed to potentially sensitize leukemia cells to the apoptotic effects of cytarabine by addressing cell cycle dysregulation and DNA damage repair aberrations. The therapy is administered in a timed-sequential manner and is currently being evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial to determine safety, tolerability, and the maximum tolerated dose in adults with treatment-resistant myeloid leukemia.
