Sertraline + omega-3 is a combination therapy involving the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sertraline and omega-3 fatty acids, typically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Sertraline acts by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing its availability and improving mood. Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and may modulate neurotransmitter function, including interactions with serotonergic pathways. This combination has been studied primarily for major depressive disorder, especially in patients with comorbid coronary heart disease or elevated cardiovascular risk factors. Clinical trials have generally not shown a significant benefit of adding omega-3 supplementation to sertraline over sertraline alone for depression outcomes[1][2][4][5]. However, some studies suggest potential benefits on certain secondary measures such as social functioning or cardiovascular risk factors[1][5].
