Overview

Sertraline or venlafaxine refers to either of two distinct antidepressant medications, each with different mechanisms of action and clinical profiles. Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic neurons. It is primarily indicated for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder[4][7][10]. Venlafaxine is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that increases both serotonin and norepinephrine levels by inhibiting their reuptake. It is mainly used for major depressive disorder but also approved for generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder[4][6][8]. Both drugs are effective antidepressants with similar efficacy in treating depression; however, they differ in side effect profiles—sertraline tends to have fewer discontinuation symptoms and less risk of increased blood pressure compared to venlafaxine[5]. Both drugs carry warnings about increased risk of suicidality in young people and the potential for serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic agents[1][8].
