Serum gonadotropin, also known as equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) or pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), is a gonadotropic glycoprotein hormone secreted by the endometrial cups of pregnant mares. It is a heterodimeric protein consisting of non-covalently linked alpha and beta subunits. In non-equine species, serum gonadotropin exhibits dual follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-like and luteinizing hormone (LH)-like activities, binding to both FSH and LH receptors to stimulate follicular development, induce estrus, and promote ovulation. It is widely used in veterinary medicine for reproductive management, including estrus synchronization and superovulation in livestock such as swine, cattle, sheep, and goats. Although historically investigated for human infertility, its clinical use in humans was discontinued due to the formation of neutralizing antibodies.
