Overview

Sesame seed refers to the seeds of the plant *Sesamum indicum*, widely used as a food ingredient and source of oil. In medical contexts, extracts from sesame seed are primarily used for allergy testing (as an allergenic extract administered intradermally or subcutaneously)[1]. The seeds contain bioactive compounds such as sesamin and sesamolin (lignans), which have demonstrated antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, anti-inflammatory, and potential antihypertensive effects in preclinical studies[2][7]. However, there is limited clinical evidence supporting therapeutic use for specific diseases. Sesame is also recognized as a major food allergen in the US[8]. Its mechanism of action when used medicinally relates mainly to its ability to provoke an immune response during allergy testing.
