Sesamol is a natural phenolic compound and a bioactive constituent of sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) and sesame oil. It is best known for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and potential anti-tumor properties[1][3][5][9]. Mechanistically, sesamol scavenges diverse free radicals—such as superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen—thereby interrupting lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress pathways[7][8]. It inhibits inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), inflammatory enzymes, and protein kinases, and modulates brain nerve growth factor and endocannabinoid signaling via CB1 receptors, which may partly underlie its antidepressant and neuroprotective effects[1][5]. Preclinical studies have shown sesamol ameliorates inflammation and oxidative stress in models of asthma, neurodegeneration (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s), cancer (e.g., hepatic, colon, skin), and metabolic syndromes[3][5][7][9]. Sesamol is sometimes explored as a lead compound or research chemical; however, it is not an approved pharmaceutical drug and is primarily available as a chemical or dietary supplement ingredient.
