Overview
Sevelamer carbonate is a non-absorbed phosphate binding polymer used to control serum phosphorus levels in adults and children (6 years and older) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It works by binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing its absorption and lowering serum phosphorus concentrations. This helps prevent complications such as hypocalcemia and bone disorders associated with hyperphosphatemia in CKD patients. Sevelamer also binds bile acids, which can lead to reductions in total and LDL cholesterol. The drug is free of metal and calcium ions.
