Overview
Sevoflurane is a volatile, non-flammable ether inhalation anesthetic used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. It acts by binding to ligand-gated ion channels, enhancing inhibitory postsynaptic channel activity, and inhibiting excitatory synaptic channel activity. This includes effects on GABA_A receptors, glycine receptors, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, serotonin receptors, and glutamate receptors. Sevoflurane modulates various ionic currents, influencing cardiac excitability and contractility. It is commonly used in both adult and pediatric patients for inpatient and outpatient surgeries.
