Overview

Sevoflurane + propofol is a combination of two anesthetic agents used together to induce and maintain general anesthesia. Sevoflurane is an inhalational volatile anesthetic, while propofol is an intravenous sedative-hypnotic agent. When administered in combination, they act additively to produce loss of consciousness and immobility for surgical procedures. This combination can provide stable respiration and circulation during anesthesia, rapid recovery of consciousness, reduced cough reflex during certain surgeries (such as nonintubated video-assisted thoracic surgery), and a low incidence of adverse reactions[2][3][4]. Both drugs primarily enhance inhibitory neurotransmission via the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor in the central nervous system; sevoflurane also modulates other ion channels including glycine receptors, glutamate receptors, calcium channels, potassium channels, and sodium/calcium exchange currents[2][5]. The use of this combination may be particularly suitable for patients requiring stable hemodynamics or those at risk for cardiovascular complications.
