Overview

This term is **ambiguous** and denotes either **sevoflurane** or **desflurane**, two distinct halogenated volatile inhalational general anesthetics. Both agents are administered through an anesthesia vaporizer and inhaled to induce or maintain general anesthesia, including as the light general-anesthesia component of anesthetic regimens used during surgery. They are not interchangeable chemical entities: sevoflurane is commonly used for inhalational induction because of relatively low airway irritation, whereas desflurane has very low blood-gas solubility and can permit rapid emergence but may irritate the airway.
