SF-2 gp120 is a recombinant form of the surface envelope glycoprotein (gp120) of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1), specifically derived from the SF-2 strain. It was developed as a candidate subunit vaccine for the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, this protein mimics the viral component responsible for binding to CD4 receptors on host T-cells. The vaccine is intended to elicit neutralizing antibodies and cell-mediated immune responses. In clinical trials, SF-2 gp120 was often evaluated in combination with novel adjuvants, such as MF59 (a submicron oil-in-water emulsion) and MTP-PE, to enhance its immunogenicity, which is generally limited when the protein is administered alone.
