SFA-001 is a novel small molecule drug derived from human microbiome metabolites and developed by SFA Therapeutics under license from Temple University. It acts as a modulator of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), specifically targeting G-protein coupled receptor 43 (GPR43), and also functions as an inhibitor of NF-kappa B signaling. The drug is being investigated for its anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, antineoplastic, antiviral, and hepatoprotective properties. Preclinical studies have shown that SFA-001 can block the progression of hepatitis B to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in animal models and reduce tumor number and size in HCC models through a non-chemotoxic mechanism. The FDA has granted Orphan Drug Designation to SFA-001 for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma[1][3][5].
