SGC-003 is a small molecule soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulator developed by the Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS) for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It functions by binding to the sGC enzyme, which is the primary receptor for nitric oxide (NO). SGC-003 exhibits a dual mechanism of action: it sensitizes sGC to endogenous NO and also directly stimulates the enzyme independently of NO. This stimulation leads to an increase in the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), a key signaling molecule that induces vasodilation of the pulmonary vasculature, inhibits the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. By targeting the NO-sGC-cGMP pathway, SGC-003 aims to reduce pulmonary vascular resistance and improve cardiac function in patients with pulmonary hypertension.
