Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the Qing Dynasty text 'Wen Bing Tiao Bian'. It is primarily used to nourish Yin and clear heat from the Lung and Stomach systems, making it a standard treatment for conditions characterized by dryness, such as chronic dry cough, dry throat, and thirst. In modern clinical practice, it is frequently investigated and utilized as a supportive therapy for radiotherapy-induced xerostomia (dry mouth) in patients with head and neck cancers, where it has demonstrated efficacy in improving stimulated salivary flow rates and patient quality of life. The formula is typically composed of seven botanical ingredients: *Radix Glehniae* (or *Radix Adenophorae*), *Radix Ophiopogonis*, *Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati*, *Folium Mori*, *Radix Trichosanthis*, *Semen Lablab Album*, and *Radix Glycyrrhizae*. The granule form (Ke Li) is a modern pharmaceutical preparation of this traditional decoction.
