Overview
Shan5 is a liquid pentavalent vaccine developed by Shantha Biotechnics, a subsidiary of Sanofi. It is designed for the active immunization of infants against five major childhood diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The vaccine is a combination of diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and Hib capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein. Shan5 was the first indigenously developed pentavalent vaccine in India to receive WHO prequalification, which allowed its distribution through international agencies like UNICEF. It is typically administered as a three-dose primary series in infants starting at six weeks of age.
