Overview

Shantograstim is a recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) biosimilar developed by Shantha Biotechnics, a subsidiary of Sanofi. Produced in *Escherichia coli* using recombinant DNA technology, it is a 175-amino acid, non-glycosylated protein that is structurally and functionally similar to endogenous human G-CSF, with the addition of an N-terminal methionine. Shantograstim acts as a hematopoietic growth factor that binds to the G-CSF receptor on precursor cells in the bone marrow, stimulating their proliferation, differentiation, and maturation into functional neutrophils. It also enhances the phagocytic and cytotoxic activities of mature neutrophils. The drug is primarily indicated for the reduction of the duration and severity of neutropenia and the incidence of febrile neutropenia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy. It was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in India, demonstrating therapeutic equivalence to the reference product, Neupogen.
