Shaoteng granule

Shaoteng granule is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) compound developed by Guang’anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences specifically for the treatment of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). The formulation is based on TCM principles of clearing heat, detoxifying, and nourishing Yin to address the underlying pathology of dryness and inflammation associated with the disease. It typically comprises a combination of herbal extracts, including *Paeonia lactiflora* (White Peony Root) and *Lonicera japonica* (Honeysuckle Stem). Clinically, Shaoteng granule has been shown to improve salivary and lacrimal gland function, reduce systemic inflammatory markers, and alleviate symptoms such as xerostomia (dry mouth) and xerophthalmia (dry eyes). Its mechanism of action involves the regulation of T-lymphocyte subsets, particularly the Th17/Treg balance, and the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). It is currently utilized as a hospital preparation and has undergone clinical evaluation to support its efficacy and safety in pSS patients.
