Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shaoyao Gancao Tang is a classical two-herb formula in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), first recorded in the 3rd century AD. It consists of Paeonia lactiflora (white peony root; Bai Shao) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice root; Gan Cao) in equal parts. The formula is primarily used to nourish blood, augment yin, soften the liver, alleviate pain from muscle spasms or cramps, and harmonize the relationship between the liver and spleen. Modern research supports its use for pain-related conditions such as muscle spasms (including those associated with restless leg syndrome), dysmenorrhea, neuralgia, myalgia, abdominal pain due to disharmony between liver and stomach/spleen systems in TCM theory[1][5][7]. Pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory effects mediated by downregulation of TRPV1 channel expression/function[2], spasmolytic action on smooth muscle[5], analgesic properties[2], neuroprotection via reduction of oxidative stress/inflammation relevant to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease[8], as well as calming effects on the nervous system. It is widely used both as a decoction and in modern concentrated powder/capsule forms.
