Overview

Shaoyao Shujin is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) granule formulation developed by Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine University Yuanchuang Technology Co., Ltd. for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The drug is based on the traditional "Shaoyao" (Paeonia) herb, which is recognized in TCM for its ability to nourish blood and alleviate pain by relaxing tendons. Pharmacologically, Shaoyao Shujin is designed to inhibit inflammatory pathways, specifically targeting pro-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), as well as the enzyme Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). These actions help to reduce synovial inflammation, alleviate joint pain, and potentially slow the progression of cartilage degradation. As of 2024, the drug is in Phase 3 clinical development in China, following successful Phase 2 trials that demonstrated its safety and efficacy in improving joint function and reducing symptoms in patients with KOA.
