Overview
Shark liver oil is a natural oil extracted from the livers of deep-sea sharks (primarily Centrophorus squamosus, Squalus acanthias, and Cetorhinus maximus). It is mainly used as a dietary supplement and traditional remedy, reputed for its high content of alkylglycerols (AKGs), squalene, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and some lipid-soluble vitamins. Shark liver oil has been promoted for use in supporting immune function, wound healing, cardiovascular health, and as an adjunct in cancer and skin condition management. Its purported mechanisms include immunomodulation (via AKGs activating macrophages and supporting antibody production), anti-inflammatory action, and influence on lipid profiles and membrane fluidity[6][7][9][1][3][5]. Clinical evidence for these uses remains limited and largely preclinical or anecdotal.
