Overview
Shellgel is a hyaluronic acid-based ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) developed by Anika Therapeutics and distributed by Cytosol Ophthalmics. It is composed of high-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate, a naturally occurring polysaccharide. During intraocular procedures such as cataract surgery, Shellgel is used as a viscoelastic agent to maintain the space in the anterior chamber of the eye and to protect delicate tissues, particularly the corneal endothelium, from mechanical damage during surgical manipulation. It received FDA pre-market approval (PMA) and is classified as a medical device/biologic material.
