Overview
Shen Ge San is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula traditionally composed of *Panax ginseng* (Ren Shen) and *Gecko gecko* (Ge Jie). In the context of TCM, it is primarily used to tonify the lungs and kidneys and to assist the kidneys in "grasping Qi," which is intended to improve respiratory and cardiovascular efficiency. Modern clinical research, such as trials conducted by Shanghai Jing'an District Shibei Hospital, has investigated Shen Ge San for the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF), particularly in patients with NYHA class II–III symptoms. The formula is often evaluated as an adjunct to standard Western therapy and Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) to improve cardiac function, exercise tolerance (measured by the 6-minute walk distance), and overall quality of life.
