Overview
Shen Qi Xiao Tan formula is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal composition developed by the Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically designed to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its macrovascular complications, particularly diabetic peripheral atherosclerosis (DPA). The formula is constructed based on the TCM principles of tonifying Qi, nourishing Yin, and resolving phlegm and blood stasis (Tan-Yu). Pharmacological research suggests that the formula exerts its effects by improving insulin sensitivity, regulating lipid metabolism, and enhancing vascular endothelial function. It has been observed to reduce systemic inflammatory markers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), which are implicated in the progression of atherosclerotic plaques in diabetic patients. The formula typically includes herbs such as *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huang Qi), *Codonopsis pilosula* (Dang Shen), and *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Dan Shen).
