Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shengjiang San (also known as Sheng Jiang San or SJS) is a traditional multi-herb formulation from Chinese medicine, historically used to treat high fever, thirst, anxiety, and more recently seasonal influenza. The formula originates from the Qing Dynasty and is composed of four main herbal ingredients in a 4:2:1:3 ratio by weight: - Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (rhubarb root and rhizome) - Bombyx Batryticatus (stiff silkworm) - Cicadae Periostracum (cicada slough) - Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (turmeric rhizome) Modern research has demonstrated that Shengjiang San exerts broad-spectrum antiviral effects against multiple strains of influenza virus both in vitro and in vivo. Its mechanism includes inhibition of viral neuraminidase activity—an essential enzyme for viral replication—and modulation of immune responses by downregulating TNF-α and upregulating IL-2. In animal models, it reduced lung viral load and improved survival rates following influenza infection. Traditionally, it is also used to clear heat stagnation, resolve phlegm/turbidity, detoxify the body, harmonize Qi movement (“raise the limpid and lower the turbid”), and treat externally contracted “warm” diseases manifesting as visceral dysfunction[2][3][5][7][9].
