Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Shengyu Decoction is a classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the Yuan dynasty and also known as Sheng Yu Tang or Sage-like Healing Decoction. It consists of six main herbal ingredients—Radix rehmanniae praeparata (prepared Rehmannia root), Radix paeoniae alba (white peony root), Radix astragali (Astragalus root), Radix ginseng (Ginseng root), Radix angelicae sinensis (Dong Quai/Chinese Angelica root), and Szechuan lovage root. The formula is primarily used to tonify Qi and Blood, nourish blood, promote blood circulation, and preserve Yin according to TCM theory[3][4]. Modern research has explored its use in conditions such as knee osteoarthritis—where it reduces cartilage damage by inhibiting inflammation and regulating proliferation-apoptosis balance via downregulation of Piezo1-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress signaling—and vascular cognitive impairment[1][2]. It is also used for patterns like Liver and Heart Blood Deficiency or Qi and Blood Deficiency that may manifest as symptoms such as palpitations or menstrual cramps[4]. The precise active ingredients are under investigation; four bioactive compounds have been identified that interact with Piezo1 ion channels[2].
