Shenqi compound is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) multi-herbal formula that has been widely used in China for over 20 years, primarily for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and its complications, including diabetic macroangiopathy and nephropathy. The formulation consists of eight main herbs: Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng (rén shēn), Radix Astragali Praeparata cum Melle (huáng qí), Radix et Rhizoma Salviae Miltiorrhizae (dān shēn), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (dà huáng), Rhizoma Dioscoreae (huái shān yào), Radix Trichosanthis (tiān huā fĕn), Radix Rehmanniae (dì huáng), and Fructus Corni (shān zhū yú)[3]. Mechanistically, Shenqi compound acts through multiple pathways including regulation of energy metabolism, stabilization of blood glucose by modulating serum insulin levels and inhibiting mTOR activation and autophagy[2], as well as reducing inflammation and protecting vascular endothelium[3][4]. It also targets genes involved in circadian rhythm regulation within pancreatic tissue. Network pharmacology studies suggest it exerts effects via multi-component, multi-target mechanisms involving protein kinase 1, albumin, insulin signaling pathways among others[4]. Clinical trials have shown efficacy in reducing blood glucose fluctuations and improving cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic patients[1][2].
