shenshuaining

Shenshuaining is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation used primarily for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and chronic renal insufficiency. It is available in capsule and tablet forms. The formula contains multiple herbal ingredients including Taizishen (Pseudostellaria heterophylla), Coptis (Coptis chinensis), French Pinellia (Pinellia ternata), Tangerine Peel (Citrus reticulata), Poria (Poria cocos), Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum), Salvia miltiorrhiza, Achyranthes bidentata, Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), and Licorice root. Mechanistically, Shenshuaining is believed to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, invigorate qi and spleen function according to TCM theory[5][6]. Pharmacological studies suggest it may increase renal blood flow, promote excretion of toxins such as indoxyl sulfate in uremic patients on dialysis[3], inhibit compensatory hypertrophy of the kidney remnant tissue after injury or nephrectomy[2], regulate metabolic state in CKD patients[2], reduce serum creatinine and BUN levels while increasing hemoglobin levels[2]. Some components like Tanshinone IIA from Salvia miltiorrhiza have demonstrated antioxidant effects and renoprotective properties. It is widely used in China for CKD management to improve symptoms such as low back pain, fatigue, pale complexion, nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite associated with chronic renal insufficiency[1][4][5].
