Overview

Shentongzhuyu decoction (身痛逐瘀汤, Shēn tòng zhú yū tāng) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the "Correction of Errors in Medical Works" (Yi Lin Gai Cuo) by Wang Qingren. It is specifically designed to treat pain throughout the body caused by blood stasis and wind-dampness. The decoction is a complex mixture of herbs, including *Gentiana macrophylla*, *Ligusticum chuanxiong*, *Prunus persica*, and *Carthamus tinctorius*, which are believed to work synergistically to activate blood circulation, remove stasis, and unblock the meridians. In modern clinical research, it is primarily investigated for its potential in treating ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and various forms of neuralgia or musculoskeletal pain. A clinical study sponsored by The First Affiliated Hospital of Heilongjiang Chinese Medicine College compared its efficacy to leflunomide in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
