shERK5 is a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) designed to silence the expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 (ERK5), also known as MAPK7. ERK5 is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family and is often constitutively activated in malignant mesothelioma (MM) cells, contributing to tumor growth, colony formation, and invasion. By silencing ERK5, shERK5 attenuates these oncogenic processes and has been shown to increase the retention and efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs like doxorubicin and cisplatin. Preclinical studies conducted at the University of Vermont demonstrated that shERK5 significantly reduces tumor weight and volume in both subcutaneous and intraperitoneal mouse models of mesothelioma.
