Overview

shGal-1 is a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) therapeutic candidate designed to silence the expression of Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a protein that plays a pivotal role in the progression of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and the maintenance of glioma stem cells. By targeting Gal-1 mRNA for degradation, shGal-1 reduces the levels of Gal-1 protein, which in turn downregulates the expression of CD147 (Basigin) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9). This inhibition disrupts the Gal-1-CD147-MMP9 signaling axis, which is associated with tumor cell invasion, integrin regulation, and poor overall survival in GBM patients. Currently utilized in preclinical research, shGal-1 serves as a tool to validate Gal-1 as a therapeutic target for high-grade gliomas.
