Overview
Shi Xiao San (失笑散), also known as Sudden Smile Powder, is a traditional Chinese medicine formula first recorded in the 12th century. It consists of two main herbal ingredients: Cattail Pollen (Pu Huang) and Flying Squirrel Feces (Wu Ling Zhi). The formula is classified under "formulas that invigorate Blood and dispel Blood Stagnation." Its primary actions are to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, disperse accumulations, and relieve pain. Shi Xiao San is commonly used for conditions associated with blood stasis such as abdominal pain or masses, painful menstruation with dark clots, traumatic swelling or pain due to injury, and other symptoms like purple lips or nails. It is contraindicated during pregnancy due to its strong effect on blood movement[1][2][6].
