Shi-xiao-san + er-zhi-wan is a combination of two traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas. Shi Xiao San (Sudden Smile Powder) consists primarily of Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces) and Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen), and is used to invigorate blood, dispel blood stasis, disperse accumulation, and alleviate pain. It is commonly prescribed for conditions associated with blood stagnation such as dysmenorrhea, abdominal pain, traumatic injury pain, and abnormal uterine bleeding[1][2][6]. Er Zhi Wan (Two Ultimate Pill) is another classic TCM formula composed mainly of Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum lucidum fruit) and Han Lian Cao (Eclipta prostrata), traditionally used to nourish liver and kidney yin deficiency—often for symptoms like dizziness, premature graying hair, or weakness in the lower back. The combination has been studied in clinical trials for primary biliary cholangitis[9]. The mechanism of action from a TCM perspective involves promoting blood circulation while nourishing yin; from a biomedical standpoint these formulas may have anti-inflammatory effects or modulate immune responses. This combination does not correspond to any single pharmaceutical drug but rather represents a multi-ingredient herbal therapy typical in TCM practice.
