shigactive

ShigActive is an orally administered bacteriophage preparation developed by Intralytix, Inc., for the prevention and treatment of shigellosis. It is a cocktail of five lytic bacteriophages that specifically target and kill all four species of Shigella bacteria (*S. boydii*, *S. dysenteriae*, *S. flexneri*, and *S. sonnei*), which cause bacterial dysentery. The mechanism of action involves the phages infecting and destroying the pathogenic Shigella bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, with the goal of reducing the incidence and/or severity of infection. This targeted approach serves as a potential alternative to broad-spectrum antibiotics, aiming to combat antibiotic resistance without significantly disturbing the normal gut microbiota. ShigActive is being evaluated in a Phase 1/2a clinical trial (NCT05182749).
