Overview

Shigamabs is a combination of two chimeric monoclonal antibodies, cαStx1 and cαStx2, designed to neutralize Shiga toxin 1 (Stx1) and Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2), respectively. These toxins are produced by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and are the primary drivers of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a severe condition characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury. By binding to and neutralizing the toxins in the systemic circulation, Shigamabs aims to prevent the toxins from entering host cells and causing the vascular damage that leads to HUS. The drug was developed by Thallion Pharmaceuticals and was evaluated in the Phase II SHIGATEC trial in pediatric patients with STEC infections. However, the development program was terminated following the acquisition of Thallion by Bellus Health.
